Meet Our Frame My Future 2016 Grand Prize Winner: Micaela Wu
As publicity commissioner of her high school’s volunteer club, Micaela Wu knew a thing or two about designing eye-catching artwork and promoting events in her community. But the idea of marketing herself as a Finalist in Church Hill Classics’ nationwide Frame My Future Scholarship Contest? The notion was a bit overwhelming at first.
“In the beginning of the voting period, I was a little hesitant to spread the word,” Micaela reveals. “I don’t use my social media accounts that much and am pretty shy in the public eye [but] going out of my comfort zone to solicit votes definitely paid off.”
It certainly did. Micaela received a record-breaking number of votes during the public online voting phase of the contest, handily securing the title of 2016 Grand Prize Winner.
“My family was overjoyed to hear the news. We all worked together to publicize during the voting period,” explains Micaela. “We worked tirelessly to ask everyone we knew. My supportive network of friends and family made winning this scholarship possible!”
The Frame My Future Scholarship Contest 2016 asked students to submit an original creation expressing what they hope to achieve in their personal and professional lives after college. From the 4,800 submissions we received, Micaela and 23 other Finalists were selected. The Finalists reached out to family, friends, teachers, newspapers, local organizations, and online communities to garner votes for their entries.
Micaela, who will be a freshman at California Polytechnic State University in San Luis Obispo this fall, won a $1,000 scholarship toward her tuition for the 2016-2017 academic year. In addition, Church Hill Classics will be donating $1,000 in Micaela’s name to Cal Poly’s scholarship endowment fund.
“The feeling is surreal!” says Micaela. “I am so grateful that other students can benefit from this scholarship. It is exciting to know that I contributed to a greater cause.”
The Friend Who Framed Her Future
Micaela’s winning creation is a photographic bird’s-eye view of her future: science books, a cup of tea, a healthy breakfast, and a hand weight. At the heart of this composition is a smartphone featuring an image of Micaela with her friend Jena—the person who helped shape the future Micaela envisions. (Jena’s name has been changed to protect her privacy.)
“The start of Jena’s recovery from her eating disorder signified a new beginning and marked the start of my interest in nutrition,” Micaela explains in her entry. “The extremity of my close friend’s condition both startled and fascinated me. Though I offered no professional help, I perused nutritional blogs and articles to offer her the best advice. Jena has long since recovered, but my interest in nutrition has not dwindled. I aspire to become a dietitian to help others, like Jena, overcome and conquer eating disorders.”
Jena remains a close friend of Micaela’s. Jena knew that Micaela had a deep interest in nutrition, but had no idea until this year how she influenced Micaela’s career path. Jena was not surprised when she learned Micaela won the contest.
“She possesses an unwavering passion for nutrition and helping others. During the worst times of my eating disorder, Micaela was one of the only friends who remained by my side and supported me when no one else would,” Jena recalls. “To have impacted her aspirations is humbling and I am confident she will grow to be a very successful nutritionist.”
Ten years from now, Micaela hopes to be a registered dietitian, helping others who are going through eating disorders or illnesses. As for the next four years of college? “I most look forward to growing intellectually, and as a person. I am excited to become independent, begin my career journey, and take courses that interest and excite me.”
MORE ABOUT MICAELA
How did you know that Cal Poly was the right fit for you?
I visited Cal Poly SLO (San Luis Obispo) a number of times before coming to a decision. It was very difficult to choose between SLO and another school, since both had similar programs. However, I ultimately chose SLO because I felt it was most suitable for my personality and learning style. I wanted a closer professor-student relationship. While visiting, I got to speak to a number of professors who were genuinely excited and happy to speak with me. I absolutely love the campus with its mountains and the beach close by. I like the Cal Poly emphasis on “learning by doing,” and I felt very welcome by the staff and students there.
Do you have any words of advice or tips for high school junior who’ll be making that all-important decision next year?
Choose the college that you know is right for you! Don’t simply choose a college for the reputation or to please others. You know you’ve chosen the right place when you send your SIR (Statement of Intent to Register) and feel good about it.
How did you get the word out for the Frame My Future Contest?
I’m involved in various organizations in my community, including church, volunteer clubs, Girl Scouts, and orchestra. I received the most responses when I shared about the scholarship in Facebook groups and personal messages. I sent emails to most of my high school’s faculty and staff and to some teachers from my middle and elementary school. Many of my friends and family shared my scholarship information with their friends, some across the world!
Are you excited to frame a new future at Cal Poly?
Yes, I can’t wait to start school this fall! And when I receive my Bachelor of Science in Nutrition in four years, I’ve already picked out the perfect graduation gift.
