Hsien-Ping Cha

Sunnyvale, California
School: Rhode Island School of Design
From my childhood upbringings in a conservative Chinese community, I assumed that art and design is not considered as significant as other fields such as engineering and science as the idea that artists will ultimately lead futile lives has long been drilled into my head. Yet after immigrating to America, the liberal views broadened my perspective and cultivated my dream to become a designer. In addition to the hours I have committed volunteering at the hospital after school, my aspiration further developed to become a designer for medical equipments. From communicating with the patients and witnessing the struggles they endure, I discovered tremendous opportunities and possibilities that can greatly improve their living conditions through design. After graduating from Rhode Island School of Design with a degree in Industrial Design, I frame my future to be a designer who assists those who had lost a limb to run and dance and the senile with arthritis to painlessly grasp a pen to write and draw.
