Let’s Throw a Graduation Party!

Once the graduation ceremony is over, and the (decorated) grad cap and gown are no longer needed, and the diploma is either in hand or soon to be mailed (remember to frame it)…it’s time to celebrate!

It’s best to make party plans ahead since there’s lots to consider.

Ryan, a marketing intern at Church Hill Classics, is graduating from Ridgefield High School in Connecticut, and plans to attend Virginia Tech in fall 2012.  He and his parents are already getting prepared for his upcoming graduation party in June.  His preparations follow…

Activities for College Colors Day – September 2nd

With College Colors Day here, it’s important to know what to do on this day in addition to wearing your favorite college’s colors.* At Church Hill Classics, a recent company newsletter had information about College Colors Day, as well as a couple of activities the company as a whole will be participating in. Since “college and pizza do go hand-in-hand,” according to our newsletter, “CHC is bringing in a pizza lunch for everyone to enjoy!” In addition, &ldqu ...

College Colors Day – A Start to the School Year

What colors are you wearing September 2?  I only ask because September 2 is College Colors Day!  When I was first told that the employees of Church Hill Classics would be participating in “College Colors Day,” I immediately wanted to find out what this day is all about. I went directly to the College Colors Day website and saw “Step 1: Wear Apparel Representing your Favorite College on Friday, September 2, 2011.” The point is, according to the website, “W ...

Tornadoes and Tuscaloosa

A Connection with Sigma Alpha Epsilon! The stormy weather which brought a barrage of tornadoes that struck the south in April, hit a chord with me because of the fraternity SIGMA ALPHA EPSILON which was started 155 years ago in TUSCALOOSA, ALABAMA. Of all those locations in which tornadoes touched down in the south, Tuscaloosa was one of the most heavily hit. My connection was a blog I posted earlier this week about a son and father - Mark  and his dad John – who had each joined this very frat ...

Father and Son Fraternity Bond

“Years ago, when my father passed away, I found his fraternity certificate in his papers. Because he had kept it for so many years it had special meaning to me,” said Mark Corbett of Connecticut. “We shared the bond of father and son as well as being members of the same fraternity, Sigma Alpha Epsilon. It gave me the push to search mine out of the basement. For a time they both sat together in a folder in my desk.”

It's "Earth Day" All Year Long for These Employees

Some of their efforts include recycling bottles and cans, donating leftover matboard, and collecting used up toner cartridges, conserving on paper use, and collecting paper to be recycled. Sally, who works in our Accounting Department, volunteers to take co-workers’ empty bottles and cans in the company recycling bin off to be recycled each week. “I take the [items to] recycle home every Friday,” explained Sally. “The town picks it up Monday morning.  I have been doing th ...

Honoring Service on Veteran's Day - Bookstore Manager as Reservist in Iraq

Just about a year ago, Troy Novak, Manager, of the Dakota Textbook Company at the University of North Dakota, was not available at the store. He was overseas in Iraq until March, where he was stationed as a reservist with the Air Force.  When I had the occasion to talk to Troy after his return, I asked him if he would write about his experience for a Veteran's Day blog.

Decorating Graduation Caps

decorating graduation capsWhen my son graduated from Newtown High School in Connecticut, lo and behold, there were quite a few seniors who had decorated their graduation caps! This extra festive atmosphere made me wonder, "Hmm...What's this all about?" The caps looked creative and fun, - some with flowers, some with furry-looking trim, others with colored duct tape messages or the year of graduation. After seeing the procession of all the seniors, I saw the point to this tide of originality.

One Veteran's Story - Revisiting the Past

He was sitting at an outdoor café in Europe with his tour group, wearing a cap that said, "World War II Veteran, Served with Pride," and a customer in the restaurant leaned down and put his hand on his shoulder and simply said, "Thank you." "You know what they're referring to," recalled Herbert Rosenberg of Trumbull, CT. "It really got to you.  It touched me." Herb, and his grandson, Jordan, who recently graduated from Skidmore University and has a great interest in history, went toge ...

Framing Your Record Album Covers and Records

It's Really Art Do you have any record album covers or record albums just stored away at home? I know I do. Here's a great idea from the "home & garden buzz" on the cafémom website:  "A great way to add a little nostalgia to your room is breaking out that old record collection...and hanging it on the wall!" The author of this CafeMom blog noted that "I love reusing old items in my home decor. It's not only recession ...
